It's too bad only 1 Apocalypse game was played. I used Necrons 4 out of 5 of these non-1 on 1 games.

In 54 1 on 1 games I am 35-6-13 against 22 different players. Out of those 54 games 12 were Planetstrike games, 3 were Battle Missions, 3 were Combat Patrols, and 4 were custom missions.

I was involved in a Combat Patrol League, a Planet Strike League, and a Tale of 4 Gamers League as well as the on-going Galus Crusade Campaign. I played in two local 1250pt tournaments finishing 2nd place in both of them I believe (one I know for sure). All the leagues lost momentum at the end and never truly finished unfortunately but my Necrons did quite well in the Planetstrike league going 5-0-2.

Other Stats:
Most common point level was 2000 (20 games), with 1250 being second (12) and 2500 a close third (11).

The most common army faced:
Bar none it was Space Marines which all in all had 32 appearances of some sort against me... most were codex chapters but 11 of them were Space Wolves who were my most common opponent.

Tied for second were Orks and Imperial Guard with 8 appearances each. Chaos Marines fell mightily from last year with only 5 appearances. Necrons, Eldar, Demons, and Tyranids rounded out the bottom with 4 or less appearances.

The one thing I learned this year is that if you really want a challenge, play Necrons at 1250pts. Good luck!Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-4629032600289524772010-08-30T08:56:00.000-07:002010-08-30T09:00:50.182-07:00WHF 'Ard Boyz report: Lizardmen. So Rhellion convinced me to go to the WHF 'Ard Boyz tournament and since he did build a box of Saurus for my army I felt obliged... if anything to get my Saurus from him! I dialed back my usual Friday night debauchery and went rolling into the tournament on 5 hours of solid sleep which has been par for the course the last 2 weeks due mostly to work.

It should be known that I am a total N00b at WHF and even though I have probably played more games of 8th edition than most people there I would be facing off against veteran players of 7th edition with probably 100's of games more experience than I.

That being said I think Lizardmen are one of the better armys out there and I took the following list.

Slann: General, BSB w/ Eternal Flame. Cupped Hands, Cogitation, Rumination, Life Loremaster.

Skink Priest: lvl 1, Dispel Scoll.
Saurus Hero: ASF sword, Gambler's armor, Potion of Speed.
Saurus Hero: Great weapon, Armor of Destiny.

30 Spear Saurus: FC
25 Saurus: FC
24 Saurus: FC
10 Skink Skirmishers
10 Skink Skirmishers

6 Chameleon Skinks
6 Chameleon Skinks
5 Cold One Riders: Warbanner
3 Terradons

Ancient Stegadon
2 Salamanders
2 Salamanders

Game 1 against Bretonnians

General on Pegasus
Green Knight
Hero on Pegasus
Hero BSB
Level 2 Lady
2 Trebochets
some bowmen
5 Pegasus Knights
A crap ton of Knights

I know nothing about Bretonnians having never faced them.

During deployment we both rolled a ton of 1's which stuck a lot of our units on the left flank including my Slann which put him out of range of helping a lot of my army let alone hurting anything in the Bretonnian army. Wouldn't have mattered anyway because...

My Slann rolled horribly. Rolling two 1's on three plus casting dice and failing to cast three times during the game... even rolling three 1's and a 2 on four dice failing to cast Regrowth. So magic was pretty much a non-factor. My Salamanders managed to misfire 3 out of their first 4 shots as well. Awesome!

I did manage to beat down his largest unit of Knights but my opponent rolled double 1's on his leadership test two times in a row to keep a large portion of my army locked in combat! And when I finally broke them they ended up bouncing through 4 units and a building ending up over 30" away from their starting point to safety and easily rallied.

My opponent had his share of badluck with both Trebuchets destroying themselves to misfire on the last turn but I had the worst of it.

Hero of the match was my Warbanner Cold One surviving endless combat with a unit of Knights and the Hero on Pegasus for 4 rounds and actually forcing the unit of Knights along with the attached Lady to flee!

In the end we hardly killed anything of each others armys completely. Apparently fleeing at the end of the game means nothing so I ended up with a minor loss like 700 to 400 in VPs (seriously!). But I captured more standards and had more core choices alive for +2 BPs.

My opponent was a good guy though and we went to Taco Bell after the game.

Game 2 against Lizardmen (Life vs Death!)

Slann just like mine for the most part but he had the Lore of Death!
Old Blood on Cold One with Blade of Reality.

Skink Priest on Engine of the Gods.
Skink Chief on Stegadon w/ War Spear.

2 large unit of Saurus.
Small unit of Skinks.
2 units of Skink Skirmishers.

Huge unit of Cold Ones.
Large unit of Temple Guard.
Stegadon.

This army was a real 'Ard Boyz list maxed out on Lords and Heros and three Steggies.

This was billed as Life vs Death. I ended up getting off an IF Dwellers Below which took out his Slann in Turn 3. We ended up smashing each other up pretty good. His 3 Stegadons just rolled through my Saurus blocks like nothing. I was only able to take out one Stegadon and even though I killed his Chief and Priest I get no VPs unless I kill the mount as well.

If the game ended on turn 5 I would have won but we pushed to turn 6 and his Stegadons crushed my last unit of Saurus to paste. I ended up with another minor loss but got +3 BPs.

I made soooo many mistakes in this game which I blame on being near delirious with sleep deprivation and also lack of experience:

1. Not attacking the Stegadons in combat but their riders. Even though I needed 6's to wound I would have been better off trying to kill the beasts... all my efforts attacking the riders got me 0 VPs.
2. Over-running with my Stegadon against one of his Saurus blocks which put me in range to be murdered by the Old-Blood's BoR... not sure what I was thinking here.
3. Casting Dweller's Below the second time on a Stegadon when I should have cast it on the remains of the Temple Guard. Killing that unit off would have got me a draw as I ended up losing about 1700 to 1400 in VPs but I did gain +3 BPs.

Game 3 against Vampire Counts.

He had 4 Vampires. Lots of wolves and 4 large units of Ghouls (half of which ended up in reserve). A large unit of Knights and Grave Guard and a Varghulf.

This is the game where the gods of luck pay me back 100 fold. First turn I cast Dweller's Below on his unit of Ghouls with his Lord. He rolls a 6 and dies along with half the unit of Ghouls. My skinks obliterate his Wolves with shooting. It's just ugly and a foregone conclussion after 2 turns. Then he starts to come back.

My Slann gets caught on his own by a 22" charge from his Fell Bats. By the time I turn some units around to assist him he is killed. On the same turn my Stegadon is also killed by mass Ghoul poison! But it was too little too late and I end up crushing the rest of the Undeads with my 3 relatively untouched Saurus blocks AND I gain all 4 BPs!

In no small part of gaining bonus BPs and some people actually leaving after two games I ended up pulling third place with my one glorious victory! All glory to the Hypnotoad!

Congrats to Rhellion for winning with his Skaven. 2nd place went to Warriors of Chaos featuring what else? Tons of Chaos Warriors!Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-14192300248436257702010-07-24T19:43:00.000-07:002010-07-24T20:39:52.464-07:00Life Star 3000: Lizardmen vs SkavenI've been on a Fantasy kick since the release of the 8th edition rulebook and the last few weeks have seen me play a half-dozen or so games learning as I go, mistakes were made, there was wailing and gnashing of teeth, but now I think I got enough of a handle on the game to go big with nearly my entire army. Some Skinks were built literally minutes before being deployed...

So this was a massive battle that took well over 4 hours to play mainly because we rolled up Battle for the Pass and played length-wise down the board and I'm still pretty new to the game. Lots of maneuvering and not a lot of room adds up to lots of units that took a while to see combat.

Rhellion's Skaven have been 13th Spelling the local armys off the table including my Lizardmen in a previous 2000 point battle. Well no more! I was almost ready to give up.

My Chameleons kill the Warp Lightning Cannon. Revenge! Terradons crush the Gutter Runners with rocks leaving one survivor who breaks. During the game this little rat runs through Skinks, Saurus, and a Hell-Pit passing all DT tests, rolling a 3 to almost rally twice and finally runs off the board in turn 5. Slann casts Dwellers Below on the Stormvermin using 6 dice but no IF so it was scrolled. I cook some Stormvermin with my Salamanders. Cold Ones charge and see off the Doomwheel... for now.

TURN 2
Screaming Bell gets pushed into 24" range of the Life Star's front rank but 24" away from the Slann to avoid the Becalming Cogitation. Curse you pre-measure! 13th Spell Power scroll IForces as it does but results in only 8 dead Saurus as the miscast results in a Dimensional Cascade destroying the Greyseer and obliterating 20 Clanrats pushing the Bell. "I regret nothinggggg...!" HPA closes in. Saurus block flees from charging Plague Furnace. Salamanders flee from charging Assassin. The game of cat and rat begins... 2 more Cold One Riders die to Doomwheel shooting.

Everything rallies. The 2 remaining Cold Ones charge a unit of Slavens in the backfield who hold to fight but with no Greyseer general around to help their leadership they lose combat and are run down. Oldblood with the BoR declares a charge against the HPA who flees. Slann leaves the Life Star as he would now be forced to the front rank and casts Dwellers Below with IF which results in Detonation miscast but this means nothing as he's alone so I don't use Cupped Hands. Blowpipes blow and do 1 wound to the Assassin... fail.

TURN 3
HPA rallies. Warlord steps out to charge the Oldblood... I flee rather than face an I7 Fellblade with my un-potioned Oldblood. Warlord ends up rolling snake-eyes for charge distance. I'm furious at this as my Oldblood runs 10" away! Assassin charges Saurus spear block and challenges the Saurus Champion who declines... epic fail combat sees no one die but Assassin flees from the mighty banner and rank bonus and is run down. Doomwheel runs over the Chameleons... curse you compulsory movement negating charge reactions! Plague furnace charges Skink Skirmishers who flee through Terradons no panic no harm no one else for the Furnace to redirect too. I scroll a really high casting roll of Plague. Plague Mortars continue to claim Saurus as the casualties start to add up.

Salamanders and Oldblood rally. Warlord gets shot down by S6 Awakening of the Wood (he had wounded himself twice already with the Fellblade.)

TURN 4
Rhellion remembers his Storm Banner and uses it... it will remain up all rest of the game so the Terradons just waddle around from here on out. Stormvermin keep on truckin'. Plague Furnace tries again to charge the Saurus who flee again. Doomwheel shoots down the last 2 Cold One Riders but hurts itself on the Ghost Fence. Then just when things start to look alright... something retardedly unfortunate happens. The Screaming Bell rolls up a Deafening Peel which inflicts D3 wounds on any model over T7 on the board. Not a big deal... UNLESS YOU HAVE AN ENTIRE UNIT OF FUCKING SAURUS WITH T8!!! So I'm left with the 3 Command Saurus and the Scar-vet fighting the HPA after armour saves. HPA don't like T8 Saurus and he fails to kill any and loses combat suffering 2 wounds but doesn't flee. Plague Priest throws 6 dice at the Plague and gets it off with like a 24 with no 6's and I fail to dispel it... a unit of Skink Skirmishers, a Terradon and several Saurus die as the contagion spreads among the Lizardmen's ranks.

The Saurus who have been running from the Plague Furnace almost all game fail to rally and come within 1/2" of fleeing off the board! Playing lengthwise FTW! The Oldblood closes in on the Plague Furnace seeking to BoRealities it. Magic phase continues to roll on with high numbers... Slann casts Dwellers Below on the Plague Monks with IF swallowing up a half dozen or so and passing on the Calamitous Detonation miscast with the Cupped Hands to the Plague Priest causing a few more casualties on the Plague-ridden rats... only 1 dice is lost from the pool. Saurus get some Flesh to Stone T8 love again and fight the HPA to a standstill.

TURN 5
Stormvermin flee again. Doomwheel forgets to move and is pretty much out of the game. Plague furnace attempts to charge Salamanders who flee... charge redirect to the Slaan but it's a long shot... Slaan holds... Plague Furnace charge fails by a lot. HPA eats the Saurus banner but combat is another stale-mate leaving just the Champion and Scar-vet and 3 wounds on the HPA. Plague is cast again with a high non-IF roll and again the Slann fails to dispel and more Saurus spear warriors die leaving just 5 of the once 28 strong block of warriors but the plague then bounces to the Clanrats with the BSB who lose a dozen to the out of control Pestilen's magics! Throne of Vines is dispelled by the Priest.

Salamanders rally and Saurus who have fled from the furnace rally at the table edge on a solidly cold-blooded 8... HUGE! Oldblood charges the Plague Furnace to be challenged by the Monk Champion... grrrrr. The Slaan puts up Throne of Vines and proceeds to go bonkers rolling 2 IForces in a row but ignores the miscast thanks to the Throne of Vines 2+. The Saurus fighting the HPA get 3 models back from Regrowth and the T8 boost again. The music dies again as the HPA kills the musician again and the remaining Saurus in a flurry of 6's... it was only a matter of time. Scar-vet holds like a champ.

TURN 6
Stormvermin flee off the board. HPA eats the brave Scar-vet. Clanrats fail to charge the 5 remaining Saurus. Now for the big rules debate: actually 2 rules debates. #1: Blade of Realities vs Skaven Strength in Numbers rule. I argue your own, unmodified leadership is what is on your stat-line... Rhellion says Strength in Numbers ALWAYS adds to your leadership no matter what per Skaven FAQ. We roll off and I win the debate. Now on to rules debate #2. The Plague Priest challenges my Oldblood and still gets to use the attacks from the Plague Furnace on my Old-blood but I can only attack the Plague Priest?!? What the hell is a Plague Furnace anyway? We could not find anything in the rules that allows me to attack what we consider the Plague Furnace to be... a monsterous mount in a challenge... so my Old-blood while murdering the Plague Priest was blasted apart by a number of S10 hits from the Plague Furnace he could not attack and was killed. Sweet.

No charges to declare. The Hypnotoad goes out in style with a box-cars Magic phase casting a mighty 24 non-IF Dwellers Below which devastates the Clanrats and he finishes them off with an Awakening of the Wood blasting. The Skink Skirmishers pin-cushin the last Screaming Bell Clanrat Champion who they had been whittling down for half the game.

The After-math

Magic was insane... I think the lowest roll was a 6 just one time.

The Skaven have the Screaming Bell, Plague Furnace, the HPA with 3 wounds, the Doomwheel with 1 wound, and about a dozen Plague Monks left.

I have my Slann, Scroll caddy Skink Priest, 5 Saurus w/ spears, the full Saurus unit that almost ran off the board, grounded Terradons, both Skink Skirmisher units and the Salamanders.

Tallying up the VPs I end up winning by a little over 100 points... not bad considering I get nothing for the Grey Seer or the Plague Priest because their 'mounts' are still alive. ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!

Well this game has taught me a few things. 1: I probably will not be fielding an Engine of the Gods any time soon. Losing the thing to a 90 point cannon just isn't worth it... points are better used on more Salamanders and Saurus Warriors. 2: Blade of Realities on an Old-Blood needs to be riding with the Cold Ones and a Champion. While a Carnosaur would be ideal there just isn't enough points outside of 4000pt games where this will happen with a Slann.

I'm sure I got a few things out of order in the batrep. Rhellion was the one that actually took notes!Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-51302351698186729642010-04-07T14:08:00.000-07:002010-04-07T21:21:57.939-07:00Blood Bowl: general tacticsI won my local Blood Bowl league (SEMBBL at http://www.stuntyleeg.com/) last night with my Undead team Tut's Nuts. I finished with a 6-1-0 record. After getting some pretty cold dice in the casualties caused by blocking category they turned hot in my last two games against some crunchy av7 Skaven and Norse teams. Luck has more then it's share in Blood Bowl but a lot has to do with positioning your players and mitigating risk so I've come up with a very general set of tips really quick that I use when playing but YMMV. My own 9 step program as it were:

1. The Basics. Stand up guys and do all moves first that need to be done. Do the most important blocks or blitz first (unless of course a move or blitz depends on the outcome of another block.) Avoid single dice blocks, but sometimes they aren't all that bad if for example your player has Block and the guy he hits doesn't... Basically anything that only has a 50% chance of success probably shouldn't be attempted (like dodging with AG2) unless failure wouldn't matter or if you are desperate. Save fouls for last.

2. The Coin Toss. In the hundreds of games I've played I can't recall the last time I have ever wanted to not receive the kickoff. You get to dictate the pace of the game and you get the first chance at gaining a numerical superiority on the pitch by placing the first blocks and fouls.

3. Pace. Unless you are a quick scoring team (elves, skaven, etc.) or are getting pummeled after a few turns then what's the rush in trying to score? Stalling (which is the art of NOT scoring even if you can) because you have a numbers advantage or to give your opponent less than 2 turns to score is a key tactic to master. Of course it's fun to engage in an elf-bowl style shoot-out from time to time, but personally I like more blood in my Blood Bowl. More blocks for me = more blood!

4. Fouling. Get as many assists as you can and foul as much as you can (worrying about doubles getting you ejected is for sissies!) Don't waste a good foul on some skilless player though, target the best prone player. Fouling is to be done by YOUR skilless player... unless he has Dirty Player or Sneaky Git then he is a skilled fouler, haha. Fouling on the last turn of the game is considered poor sportsmanship unless the player being fouled is an abomination (like a one-turn scorer, or any elf or dwarf.)

5. Protect the Ball. Position players anticipating you will fail a pickup. Learn to form a proper cage. For high speed and AG teams spread out and put multiple players threatening to score in your opponents half of the field while keeping the ball carrier out of blitz range, etc. Basic stuff.

6. Protect your best players. Leaping the AG5 War Dancer into the middle of a cage or orcs may seem cool, but it's a good way to get dead. Protect key players (usually the skilled guys that score or maybe that guy with the chainsaw...), don't follow up on a block if it will put you at a disadvantage.

7. Defense... and more Defense. There is rarely any reason to put more then 3 players on the line unless you like having your players hit or maybe have a LARGE numerical advantage against an agility team. Anyway, make sure it's your WORST 3 players. Group them together, they will take less hits that way... in other words if the end guy gets pushed then your opponent can't push him somewhere to hit him again unless he wants to blitz or maybe got a Quick Snap but I digress...

To stop someone from advancing place your guys like so from the sideline: empty square (don't put anyone by the sideline!), guy, empty square, empty square, guy, empty square, empty square, guy. Then put guys immediately behind those guys in the same pattern... it's easy to blitz one guy out of the way and move past... it's impossible if another guy is right behind him without making multiple dodges to get past.

8. Hit and Run. If you can't stop an opponent from scoring or are getting pummelled then run away, isolate an opposing player or two, and gang foul them. Do this especially if they are stalling... hell you should probably just do it anyway.

9. Skillz. Basically Block is the most useful skill to have but if the player is AG4 take Dodge 1st then Block. Block + Dodge together (Blodge) is useful on anyone and greatly increases that players survivablility, so if a double is rolled on someone that normally can't have Agility skills then Dodge is never a bad choice. Always take +STR, and almost always take +AG (depends on the player) if rolled. If bashy then load up on Guard and Mighty Blow (there are exceptions such as Break Tackle for Lizardmen but this is general advice). If not then Side Step and Fend are good. It always pays to have atleast one guy with Kick and/or Dirty Player and a few with Tackle.

Hope these help, if someone wants me to elaborate on specific team builds or other tactics then let me know I've got several hundreds of games worth of experience to pull from :-)Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-21041738336665923312010-03-19T11:04:00.000-07:002010-03-19T11:07:26.234-07:00Forgeworld RuntbotWho wants to go to England and get me one?

More pics here: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/runt.htmGargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-1491576207233922022010-03-15T09:40:00.000-07:002010-03-15T09:41:11.413-07:00This Week in GamingThis last Tuesday I was able to play two of the new Battle Missions with my Space Marines against Nick's Necrons. The first was the Space Marine scenario All-round Defence. There is a central objective and whoever holds it wins the game. Players alternate deploying or placing units in reserve (with certain restrictions) with the Marines deploying around the objective. Alternating unit deployment was interesting and once the game started I was able to surround the objective pretty well limiting where the Necron Monoliths could Deep Strike in. My dice were pretty hot and I actually wrecked a Monolith with a lucky melta glance and was able to take the Necrons apart piece by piece as their reserves filtered in.

The second game we played a Necron mission: Implacable Advance. I haven't read all the missions yet in the new supplement but it looks like Necrons have some pretty interesting ones. Implacable Advance has you playing length wise with three objectives located in the center of each third of the table. Both armies are stubborn and the ability to out-flank is not allowed. A big boost to the Necrons. This game was much more fun then the first and it really felt like something different. I was able to assassinate the Nightbringer on turn 1 with my Drop Podding Sternguard's Hellfire rounds and Immobilize both Monoliths early stalling the Necron... ahem... Impacable Advance.

I was also able to get in two Blood Bowl games. One was my weekly SEMBBL league game with my Undead team Tut's Nuts taking on some Dark Elfs. The Dark Elfs had a chance to score but failed a pickup, one of many. I killed a Journey Elf adding another zombie to my growing roster. I also stomped on the neck of the most skilled Dark Elf player... only putting the foul boot to a dorf is more satisfying then kicking an elf when they are down :) I ended up pretty much crippling the poor Dark Elf team and won 2-0.

The second game was part of an open league and I broke out my orc team, Murda Skwad to take on Bud's Necromantic team. We stomped on each other good as a constant stream of players were sent to the hurty box. I ended up winning that one 2-0 as well but have two MNG for the trouble including a -AV blitzer (argh! me skull!). I forgot how fun Blood Bowl actually is. Building a Blood Bowl team is one of the greatest joys of gaming.

I also assembled and primed one of the new Ork Deff Dreads and 3 Killa Kanz and started painting the Mega-Dread... more on this in the future...Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-627037913944583232010-03-08T08:27:00.000-08:002010-03-08T08:39:23.713-08:001250pt tournament reportI ended up taking the Orks to the 1250pt Tournament at a LGS. I went with a Warboss, a 6 ork Nobz mob in a Trukk, Trukk Boyz, 3 x 20 ork boy mobz and a Deff-Rolla Battlewagon.

The list restrictions in place were a max of 1 HQ, 5 Troops, 2 Elite, 2 Fast Attack, and 2 Heavy Support. None of the Elite, Fast Attack or Heavy Support choices could be duplicate units. A Win was worth 2 points, a draw 1, and a loss 0. Victory Points would be the tie breaker.

There were 14 players with 3 Ork, 2 Imperial Guard, 1 Space Wolf, 1 Necron, 1 Tau, 2 or 3 Tyranid, 1 or 2 Space Marine, and 1 or 2 Eldar players. I was surprised there was not any form of Chaos army.

First game: Imperial Guard w/ CCS, 2 Vet Squads, all with meltas in Chimeras. 2 Vet Squads on foot with meltas. 3 Sentinals, Hellhound, 2 Hydras, and Marbo.

The mission was Annihilation with Spearhead deployment and 3 bonus objectives which were worth 1 Kill Point and 50 victory points.

We pretty much annihilated each other over the first 4 turns. My opponent played very aggressive and actually charged me with his Guard multiple times! I had only 2 ork units both below 50% left at the end of the game while my opponent had the 2 Hydras, 2 Sentinals and one Vet Squad remaining.

My last two units hunkered down in cover on two objectives for the last 3 turns (yes it went the full 7 game turns) and weathered the remaining Hydra and Sentinal shooting. I ended up winning 11 (including the +2 objectives) to 8 (including +1 objective) even though I lost by 180 victory points.

Second game: Tyranids w/ Hive Tyrant: Venom Cannon, Old Adversary. 2 Zoanthropes, 3 Hive Guard, 2 Tervigons as Troops with all the upgrades, 2 small Termagant squads, 1 large Hormagaunt squad with Toxin. 2 Biovores.

The mission was Capture and Control with Pitched Battle deployment.

This Tyranid list is very tough to beat at 1250 points. The 5 point Termagant buffed by Furious Charge, Poisoned attacks, Feel No Pain, Counter Attack, and a Fearless Leadership 10 definately trumps my 6 point ork boy. I tried to kill the Zoanthropes first as they were the only real threat to my Battlewagon but my dice ran cold and I couldn't make any rolls to hit, wound, save, or my Nobz Feel No Pain rolls the entire game it seemed. My opponent played very defensively protecting his Tervigons with a sea of Gants... which is perfect for that army and I was nearly counter-attacked off the table!

I ended up killing the Zoats, the Hive Tyrant, and a few squads of Gants. I had 9 orks left. But guess what? I still got a draw! Each of us holding our respective objective. The game only went 4 turns before time was called so I was saved by the bell. I lost by close to 800 Victory Points but didn't lose, LOL!

Third game: I was in the top 4 having not lost yet and faced the other Imperial Guard army which was 2-0 at that point. He had a Psyker Lord, full Psyker Battle Squad in Chimera, Vets with Flamers in a Valkyrie, Infantry Platoon with Mortar Command squad, 2 Infantry squads, 2 Heavy Weapon Squads with lascannons, Ratlings, 10 Rough Riders w/ Mogul Kamir, and a Leman Russ. It was all Death Korps models save for the Psykers and Ratlings which was cool.

The mission was Seize Ground with 4 objectives and Dawn of War deployment.

My opponent had some of the worst dice I have ever seen. He failed about 6 psychic tests with his Lord and Battle Squad before my Deff-Rolla squished them all, and generally just failed miserably at shooting any and everything. I ended up steam-rolling through his army in combat, the game ending on turn 6 leaving him with a Valkyrie, Leman Russ, and Ratlings to my mostly intact army holding 3 objectives to none.

As it turned out I finished second in the tournament behind the Tyranid player I played in game two (who not surprisingly had more total Victory Points then I did.) Third place went to the Imperial Guard player from my first game. So based on the final standings I probably played the toughest schedule and with some luck ended up second. Nice work boyz!Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-78102957058054263592010-02-25T19:09:00.000-08:002010-02-26T07:30:37.446-08:00Blood Bowl League!I was once addicted to this game more then any other. I've played hundreds of online matches with FUMBBL and more recently the PC version by Cyanide. Several hundred games played. So I was excited to find out that there is a South East Michigan Blood Bowl League (SEMBBL) and it kicked off this last Tuesday!

Up from the depths of Pandemonium's used bin came the Undead legion of Tut's Nuts... bought and somewhat assembled literally minutes before the start of the league! And victory was mine in my first table top Blood Bowl game in over 5 years. A 2-0 pummeling of some orc boyz. I plan to have this team painted up this weekend.Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-49728942434387214192010-02-05T07:16:00.000-08:002010-02-26T13:24:25.351-08:00Ork Fluff: campaign league battle reportsIn the campaign we gained extra points for fluffy battle reports... below are a collection of these. My first battle was against the Black Templars as I made planetfall, this battle report details a City Fight against the White Scars.

It called to them. Like the moth to flame, the ork migrated to war. The colossal spacehulk Voidfang would bring them to the fight like the countless times before... the Warpheadz serving catalyst for the ork collective psychic consciousness combined with a precarious control of Voidfang meant the beast was never far away...

And this place had the biggest fight. 'Volstad' is what the 'oomies called it, but Gargunki was not sure if that was the name of the world or the city but nor did he care. There was a fight going on and he meant to win it. He had made sure that the Mekboyz had telly-ported them down to where the fighting would be fiercest and fierce it had been against the Black beakies..."A good scrap that." Gargunki had crippled the beakie kaptin and torn their Champion in half personally... but those Beakies had a worthy fighter named "Grim-somefing". Duffed over many of his boyz that beakie did. A worthy trophy his head would be but that would have to wait. Word had it that Morbo Krunk, the most powerful of his Warpheadz, had been cut-off to the south and was under heavy bombardment. Gargunki could not risk such a valuable asset to be lost and mounting up on his Big Red trukk he sped off, following the river south on a rescue mission of sorts...

These White beakies were fast, but Black beakies or White beakies, they would all be Dead beakies in the end. Gargunki and his retinue had come up on the White beakie bikers quickly thanks to Big Red. "Red wunz go fasta ya gitz!" Gargunki yelled as he leapt from the back of the trukk towards the beakie leader. The marine kaptin was quick striking two quick shots that would have killed a lesser ork outright. The latter blow wedged the marines blade into the cybernetic workings of Gargunki's midsection. Gargunki laughed... "Dem gutz is from da Mad Dok himself." The mighty warboss knocked the marine from his bike, stunning him. Dok Narnar pounced quickly on the prone marine sawing into the dazed kaptin as he cried out in pain. "Oi Dok! How many times I gotta tell yooz? No operatin' on da enemy in da middle of a scrap! Now gimme da fightin' juice!"

Dejected, Narnar complied injecting into Gargunki a stimulant that would kill most creatures in the galaxy dead. The marine captain took this mometary delay and struck out once more "Die xenos filth!". "GAH! dat hurt!" cried Gargunki. Already injured, the marine captain could not escape as Gargunki locked onto him with his power klaw and crushed him to a bloody pulp. This fight was over... the boyz had done good.

A sudden flash drew Gargunki's attention to the roof of the building to his right. It was Morbo Krunk! The Warphead had become excitable and started telly-portin' randomly about the city again. "Quit foolin' around yooz and get down 'ere!" Gargunki bellowed.

"Squig?" replied the Warphead.
---------------------------------

I played my new Tyranids for about half the campaign but recently fielded my orks in a pickup game against the Tyranids in a Planetstrike game where I was the attacker.

Bugs. They were everywhere. Gargunki had been fighting his way through hordes of bugs for weeks and while the fightin' was good the lootin' was not. "Can't loot a zoggin' bug-fing", his meks had told him. No matter how many rivets they used the bug weaponry was useless to them... even if it was bolted onto the orkiest of fightin' machines. And what was worse, the bugz were eating all the good loot from the 'oomies! Gargunki new of only one solution to this: Build a dead killy Stompa to flatten the bugz and 'oomies alike. That'll show 'em.

Gargunki had been notified by Shuvva Luggitz aboard the Voidfang of a big 'oomie fortress not far away that was prime for lootin' but they had to act quick. Already the bug-fings had duffed the 'oomies there and were sure to eat the fortress in a matter of hours.

The order went out and the Voidfang unleashed a firestorm onto the fortress, toppling the highest tower. "I'll smash the whole zoggin' fort if I have too." thought Gargunki. "Nothing a few rivets and orky-welds can't fix."

Shuvva Luggitz had made planetfall with his retinue of Burna Boyz and along with a mob of Warbikers and sneakin' Kommandos were the first to approach the fortress only to be devoured by a mass of bugz that came seemingly out of nowhere. But Shuvva's kustom force field was the stuff of legends and the Big Mek's Battlewagon shook off the worst of the bug weapons, his Burna Boyz torching a mass of gribblies as he continued on to the fortress walls.

Fridgechukka was also along for the fight. Him and his mob of Mega-Nobz utterly tore apart a giant bug that had burrowed under the ground to attack them. Gargunki was wise to have not killed him in the pit fight that one time as he knew Fridgechukka was dead 'ard and good in a scrap. But he'd have to keep more of an eye out for him now. A big win over a monster like that would be sure to fill Fridgechukka with orky confidence and that could lead to pit fight numba two for leadership of the boyz.

Gargunki and his Nobz were the first to enter the fortress. He had used his fast moving Trukks to lead the big-dumb bugz away and he had smashed some big-gun bugz good and proppa that been guarding the western bunker of the fortress. Nothing stood in his way of the prize now...

The fight was a good 'un... and despite some boss-bug with 4 big choppas eatin' a bunch of the ladz the fortress was all but his. The last of the bugz burned out... they could set about lootin' the place.Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-24873374766856499932010-01-21T11:57:00.000-08:002010-01-21T12:20:17.485-08:002010: the year of the brushSo in order to prioritize things:

1. Prime and paint 2000 point Tyranid army. (8 Genestealers still need to be assembled.)

2. Paint Stompa, Mega-Dread, Shokk Attack Gun battery, Ghazghkull and a small army of Nobz for my Orky Apocalypse. (Assembly needs to be done for the mass of Snotlings in the SAG battery)

3. Finish painting 2250 point Lizardman army to a better then table-top standard. (10 SKinks are already done! Yes!)

4. Paint the rest of my Marines: Pedro Kantor, Command Squad and Captain, Dreadnought, 10 Sternguard, 7 Assault Termis, 3 Drop Pods, 1 Predator, 1 Razorback, finish Devastator Squad. That would leave me with over 3000 points painted.

5. Finish the Monoliths for the Necrons! I got all the fancy red plastic and I need to complete the vision!

If I get all this done this year I will be a happy gamer!Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-46702864073408204832010-01-20T13:03:00.000-08:002010-02-26T13:21:44.552-08:00Tyranid Game 1 reviewI got my first game in with the new Tyranid codex the other day against a Space Marine army that featured Vulkan, Telion, AND Chronus. Here is my list, how each unit performed and what (if any) changes I plan to make.

I tried to make a list built on synergy that captures the essence of a Tyranid attack with creatures popping up all over the place... the only unit I spam is the Trygon but it's so cool I had to take two. Overall I was pleased with how the list worked. My reserve rolls were utter shit even with the Hive Commander upgrade and I was behind early due to this slow start. But I was able to weather the potent marine shooting for the most part and in the end was able to come out on top (mission: Annihilation/Pitched Battle).

The List
--------

Hive Tyrant: I took him mainly for the Hive Commander upgrade so I could out-flank with my Hormagaunts and add +1 to my reserve rolls. The Paroxysm psychic power is ace and made a unit of Assault Terminators fight with WS 1... they got eaten. He was attached to a single Tyrant Guard but this was not enough as he was still gunned down in the bottom of the 2nd turn by the Redeemer and Telion's huge-ass sniper squad. A 2+ save is in the Hive Tyrant's future.

Tyranid Prime: The beast of the match. Armed with Lash Whip, Bonesword, Scything Talons and Adrenal Glands he massacred the Assault Terminators almost single handedly and then butchered the Scout squad (killing 7 in 2 rounds of combat?!?). He was lucky to survive Telion's sniping on the way in and all the other shooting but still... This unit is a mainstay.

Zoanthropes: Didn't do too much but killed a few bunched up Sternguard before being boltered to death. Still, I would not leave the Hive without them.

Ymgarl Genestealers: I had my doubts and still do. They arrived late from reserve and while plagued with horrible dice at first they were great in mopping up a Drop Pod and a Tactical Squad. I actually played them wrong in that I chose my hiding area before my opponent deployed (it's after both delpoy) and I also only chose a new morph ability in my assault phase (it's every assault phase)... oh well, next time I'll use them right haha.

Warriors: I like Warriors. The shooty Warriors didn't do much... they acted as mostly a Synapse anchor and are really only there to claim objectives. The Assaulty Warriors with claws, talons and Adrenal Glands were the perfect body guard for delivering the Prime. They got blasted apart by lascannon and missile launcher, but held up really well against everything else.

Gants/Gaunts: Gants died horribly but set up the counter-charges for me, this is what they do so the 5pt Gant is perfect as far as I'm concerned. The Hormagaunts I gave Toxin Sacs which I think is better for them then Adrenal Glands and chose to out-flank them. They arrived too late in the game to participate other then running Telion off the table who was fleeing in terror from the Prime, haha.

Genestealers/BroodLord: I gave them Adrenal Glands but I think I will drop this upgrade in favor of Scything Talons. S5 on the charge sounded nice but the extra wounds it caused seemed to be cleverly canceled out with the Rending wounds due to allocation. The Broodlord eventully went toe to toe with Vulkan and came out on top after about 4 or 5 rounds of combat. I got Hypnotic Gaze off twice but was beat both times on the LD dice off. Oh well... still not bad though.

Carnifex: meh. He got annihilated on turn 1 by podding Sternguard and Chronus' Predator of Doom. I think he is there just to take the heat off the Hive Tyrant really. I think I need him but we'll see.

Trygon(s): As awesome as I thought. I took two of these bad boys and good thing. The first one came in and ate a Rhino before going down. The 2nd one came in and ate Chronus' Predator then survived on 1 wound to eat the Redeemer.Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-23775331176409556742009-12-02T15:28:00.000-08:002010-02-26T13:19:56.807-08:00Combat Patrol League batrep1Ordo Fraternitas Combat Patrol League: Battle Report 1

Gornutz was not pleased, but then again he rarely was. "Zoggin' trees!" He yelled for the umpteenth time. The vast under-growth had slowed down his advance and to Gornutz this was unnacceptable as it meant Blarnok's boyz may get to the action first.

Leading the way through the tangle of woods, Gornutz emerged into a clearing and caught sight of the enemy for the first time cowering in cover like a typical human. Gornutz could feel a pulse of energy well up inside as the enemy was now within striking distance! "Der dey are boyz! Get 'em!" With a rousing Waaagh! the boyz surged forth.

As his boyz pushed forward Gornutz looked over at Blarnok's boyz squabbling amongst themselves, their advance on the right flank stuttering. Gornutz mused for a moment, "Serves dat fluff Blarnok right fer not keepin' proppa respekt amongst da ladz." Gornutz would be Gork-damned if his boyz ever got that unruly as to create a delay from getting stuck in a good scrap!

Entering the undergrowth where the enemy was lurking Gornutz stumbled and fell as a searing blast of melta shot overhead which incinerated Narnar, the nearest boy behind him. "Zoggin' trees!" The difficult terrain did more to infuriate the Nob than the enemy guns. "Dem pewpew-lazurs weren't fit fer grots!" Gornutz had told his boyz. But now that Gornutz had failed to close the distance the initial push had failed and his boyz were shot to pieces as they got caught in the open. Several of his boyz were lit up in a swathe of flame that would make any Burna Boy greener with envy. Gornutz was momentarily impressed with the fact that the humans had brought a proper weapon and also Gulgog's burny dance, the ork warrior awash in flame was too dumb to realize he was already dead but was determined to club the 'oomie tank with his Shoota anyway.

"Come on ladz! We'ze orks and we'ze built fer winnin'!" cried Gornutz, rallying the boyz for a renewed assault wrecking the human tank. The humans evacuated the smoldering wreck, desperately shooting the still dangerous gaggle of orks bearing down on them. "Der's no escape 'oomies... I'm gonna ta clobber tha lot of yooz!" Then the world turned red in a maelstrom of death...

After the butchering of the human squad (and taking shelter behind the wrecked Chimera, he was lootin' see?), Gornutz could hear the human leader off in the distance giving orders to retreat. Gornutz had always thought that human-talk sounded like grot farts. Their nasally voices annoying but not as annoying as those zoggin' trees...Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-67394946241597217632009-11-30T18:46:00.000-08:002010-02-26T13:18:59.403-08:00Fantasy, 40k, and Forgeworld... oh my...There really isn't enough time in a day to give this great hobby all the time it deserves haha...

So last Tuesday I went from having just this painted for the Fantasy Tale of Four Gamers...

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410094357229770786" background: #FFF; style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_yYDp-fuOcsk/SxSEJ2wGmCI/AAAAAAAAAfw/fm1hJuNPj08/s320/DSC00234.JPG" border="0" />

...then two days of work later... I slacked because I spent my free time building 1500 points of Lizards for a big game of Fantasy the previous week only to have them get eaten by that thrice damned Hell Pit Abomination...

Beginning this weekend is also a 40k Combat Patrol league starting up which promises to be awesome with over a dozen players in the Ordo participating. My plan? Throw a bunch of Orks at it and see what happens...

What else are 45 Orks good at? Honestly, I was never into Fantasy but for a handful of games with a High Elf army waaaaaay back when (4th edition?) So I decided what the hell.

Well the league fell through and with the release of 8th edition looming I sit and wait with the patience of the Great Toads...

I've played about 3 games so far and have about 2500pts... waiting... soon the time will come...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_yYDp-fuOcsk/Swm9hP7WSSI/AAAAAAAAAfo/U3y8OWY-vsQ/s320/skinks.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407061206543780130" />Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-38205115941012246682009-11-08T17:16:00.000-08:002010-02-26T11:36:30.083-08:00This week in gaming.A pretty intense week of gaming for the week ending Nov. 7, 2009. On Tuesday the local PlanetStrike League came to an end. Unfortunately the last week of the league kind of petered out with people not getting in their last game because of being burned-out on PlanetStrike, scheduling conflicts, or what-not... but the League was great fun and barring the loss of momentum at the end was very exciting and added a fun new twist from just a typical Tuesday night pick-up game. The group certainly put the PlanetStrike missions through the ringer with an assortment of different armys... good games and good times.

In the seven games I played I ended up going 5-2 with my Necrons. I faced Space Marines, Orks, other Necrons (see battle reports), and Eldar. I may write up a more detailed break-down of armys and missions soon depending on time.

On Friday I had the chance to meet up with an old gaming friend I hadn't seen in a very long time. He and I played a 3-way battle with a friend of his he brought along. It was 1500 points each side with objectives being in each of the three deployment zones and 1 central objective worth 2 objectives. I used my Necrons against my old friend's Orks and his friend's Straken led Imperial Guard.

The Orks and Necrons battled it out while the Imperial Guard reserves slowly trickled in... realizing the Guard stood the best chance of victory a hasty alliance was formed between Necron and Ork but too late as the Imperial Guard won the day downing the re-reanimated Destroyer Lord in the bottom of turn 5 which would be the last of the game and claiming sole possession of the central objective in the name of the Emperor! A really, really fun game that saw the Deceiver and a 10-man squad of Mega-Nobz play cat and mouse and a Valkyrie's missile pods bombard a close combat of Orks and Necron Warriors with it's missile pods among other things!

The following day saw my first game of Warhammer Fantasy in over 10 years! I had assembled a 1000 point army of Lizardmen in quite literaly the 11th hour to face off with Rhellion's new Skaven horde. Despite some movement tray.. err... malfunctions and stumbling our way through the rules it was an enjoyable game. The Lizardmen took a severe pounding early on from a Warpfire Cannon and horrible generalship on my part. But once the Saurus and the Scar-Veteran got stuck-in the ratment had no answer. This is but the start of what is sure to be a long and bitter rivalry!

After this game I broke out my Orks against Shining's new mechanized Vulkan list for a good 1850 point scrum. The mission was Capture and Control and Pitched Battle. I was able to achieve victory by holding my objective with a 30-man Shoota Boy mob holed up in a 2-story ruin while another unit of boyz conga-lined down the side of the table and was just able to assault the Tactical Marines holding their objective in turn 6. Of note in this game was the Redeemer immobilizing itself in some ruins and the utter ineptitude of the Big Mek's Shokk Attack Gun... while it did not do anything crazy, it missed horendously and obliterated my Burna Boyz causing them to flee right as they were about to charge some Assault Terminators! My Lootas did really well as did my lone Rokkit-Buggy that somehow drove unmolested through the middle of the battle field and ended up in the enemy DZ destroying the Chronus (err... Abrahms) upgraded Predator with a side shot!

This concludes... this week innnnn war-gaming.Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-34625279778404674922009-10-21T19:21:00.001-07:002009-10-22T12:26:09.887-07:00Necron vs Necron... the thirst of Gods unleashed part 2!It was now time for Game 6 of the Ordo Fraternitas PlanetStrike League. Each two week round sees the roles of Attacker and Defender reversed. This week I would play the role of Defender... holed up in this Indomitable Fortress. A Necron structure built by one of the clubs members. A large and formidable piece of terrain, the middle section would be the main objective for the mission which was Seize and Destroy.

The main tower was protected by a Void Shield (free strategem for the mission). This was also boosted by a Power Generator (reroll failed wounds) and was Sacred Ground (granted the Fearless USR to closest friendly unit). Atop the central tower was also a Communications Array in assisting with the reserve rolls which for the Defender were at a -2 modifier.

My army was split into two halves. All things equal but one half had The Deceiver and the other half had all the Destroyers. My opponent chose The Deceiver half.

I deployed 5 Scarab Swarms in one tower, 10 Warriors in the other. And a Lord with 13 Warriors in the main objective. To the left was placed a Monolith with The Deceiver behind it. You can see a Flayed One on the hill at the bottom, this was the Ground Observer (reroll Deep Strike scatter) for the attacking Necrons.

TURN 1 ATTACKER
The Firestorm wrecks the tower containing the Scarabs (which also destroys the Missile Silo). A Monolith, Warriors, the two Destroyer and Scarab units, and the Silver Surfer Lord with Wraiths arrive. The Monolith scatters back despite the Ground Observer and takes a hit from my automated lascannon but is not damaged. The enemy Warriors run triggering my Mine Field and a few are blown apart. The attacking Necron's shooting Shakes the tower but little else is done.

TURN 1 DEFENDER
Despite the reroll on reserves I only get two things. The Destroyer Lord and the Heavy Destroyers (who remove the Ground Observer). All fire is concentrated on the unit of attacking Warriors killing all but 1.

A single destroyer attempts to snipe the last Warrior preventing them from making any We'll Be Back rolls but rolls a 1 to hit.

TURN 2 ATTACKER
Only 2 Warriors stand back up so the failure of the Heavy Destoyers isn't all that bad. The rest of the Army of Darkness arrives except a Lord leading 4 Pariahs and a pair of Tomb Spiders. Shooting Shakes the other tower again while the Silver Surfer trys to carve his way into the main objective with his WarScythe to no avail.

The Nightbringer deep strikes behind the Indomitable Fortress. What's he up too? (Off camera there is also a Monolith and unit of Warriors who have also deep struck.)

Scarab Swarms attack my Heavy Destroyers and kill one for no wounds in return. Morale is failed and my Heavy Destroyers flee off the table. A failure of epic proportions...

TURN 2 DEFENDER
Reserve rolls are much better. A Monolith, Warriors and my 5 Destroyers appear behind the enemy.

A Warrior squad of mine also arrives and walks on behind the enemy Monolith and shoots down a few enemy Warriors while my Destroyer Lord assaults and chops down a few with his WarScythe but the enemy Necrons hold on.

Concentrated fire kills more enemy Warriors which forces them to flee, leaving the fallen Warriors unable to make any We'll Be Back rolls. My Destroyers assault the fleeing enemy Warriors to hopefully avoid being shot next turn and knock another one down. The Deceiver assaults a unit of 3 Destroyers but only kills 2.

The fire power unleashed from the main tower destroyers all enemy Wraiths but the Silver Surfer passes morale and brings the central tower tumbling down in the assault phase!

TURN 3 ATTACKER
Necron Lord with Pariahs Deep Strike down and avoid a mishap by 1" from my Destoyer Lord. While the Warriors my Destroyer Lord was in combat with are teleported to safety through the nearby Monolith as well as the single Destroyer that was still engaged with The Deceiver.

The Army of the Nightbringer plays it's hand with Darken the Skies. This makes it Night Fight rules for a turn and also gives all my units -1LD. This combined with the Pariah's Soulless ability means any unit within 12" of them is now a LD6 for the turn. The enemy Lord then uses the Nightmare Shroud to force my Destroyer Lord and a unit of Necrons to take a morale check on LD6 or flee! My Warriors roll a 6 and the Destroyer Lord rolls a 3. This is huge.

Out front, concentrated fire downs a few of my Necrons who were guarding the recently ruined objective. They are assaulted by Scarabs and the Silver Surfer who drops the ball and flees combat leaving the Scarabs to tie me up. meanwhile the Nightbringer assaults the remaining tower and despite penetrating it 5 times cannot roll anything over a 3 on any of the damage results. This bit of the fortress is truly indomitable.

TURN 3 DEFENDER
It should be noted that the Minefield and Night Fight didn't really do anything significant from here on out.
I teleport the Destoyers out of the combat with the few remaining enemy Warriors and along with a unit of my own Warriors (who rolled the big 6 on morale) shoot down the Pariahs and Lord with the Nightmare Shroud.

The Nightbringer finally explodes the final tower. The Deceiver points (as he does)... "There you are!" after wrecking a Tomb Spider. At this point we remove the Necron fortress and replace it with building ruins and craters...

TURN 4 ATTACKER
The Deceiver is shot in the back and wounded twice by the 5 remaining enemy Warriors.

The Nightbringer assaults and crushes a unit of my Warriors running them down in combat and consolidating onto the main objective which is only contested by a unit of my Scarabs (don't think they can actually hold an objective). In the background you may notice the Nightmare Lord has come back to life, assaulted a unit of 12 Warriors and routed them in a single phase... yes I lost 22 Warriors in one turn. You can also partially see a Tomb Spider smashing one of my Destroyers on the right but they live to teleport out.

TURN 4 DEFENDER
Out front there were various melees and teleportations too numerous to list and even more things shot by Gauss Flux Arcs as has happened for the last few turns. A single Scarab base with 1 wound left is still tying up my large unit of Necrons led by my Lord.

Defying the odds of still being alive (functional)... my Destroyer Lord continues to harass the enemy Warriors chopping down three! Things are looking dire for the Army of the Nightbringer.

THE FINAL ACT
The Deceiver would be hard pressed to defeat Nightbringer in a straight up fight...even more so with 2 wounds. It turns it's attention to the small unit of slaves that have somehow managed to stay functional in this madness and obliterates them. This triggered the Army of the Nightbringer to phase out at the beginning of Turn 5.

Well, my plan was to concentrate on killing enemy Warriors before the Nightbringer ate my army and it worked. After my poor reserve rolls and the utter failure of my Heavy Destroyers I thought it was gonna be one of those games. But then a few huge things happened. One was that the Nightbringer didn't arrive on turn 1 and the Nightmare Lord with Pariahs didn't arrive until turn 3. In Planetstrike games the early turns are the biggest ones and every turn your heavy hitters are off the table it can hurt.

The other big thing was passing all my morale checks on Leadership 6. If my Destroyer Lord and that unit of Warriors had run off the table in Turn 3 it would have been an entirely different game.

I must say this was an enjoyable set of games. I had never played or witnessed a Necron on Necron battle and adding in the fact it was PlanetStrike made it even more interesting. Thanks to my opponent Nick for the two fun games. And also to Lee of the Ordo Fraternitas who organized the PlanetStrike league. I'm glad the Necron vs Necron showdown was able to happen without breaking the game structure of the league.

Cheers!
Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-33542992181752026022009-10-21T07:29:00.000-07:002009-10-21T15:47:07.383-07:00Blog vs Blog BatRepA few of the members of the Ordo Fraternitas have started up some blogs lately. So Rhellion and I decided to have a Blog vs Blog battle report pitting his 4th Company Ultramarines vs my Necrons... and as fate would have it I left the batteries for my camera in the charger at home so I have stolen all the pics he took of the battle from his blog... thanks bro!

Here is my army. I took The Deceiver, Lord (WarScythe, Res Orb, Nightmare Shroud, Gaze of Flame.) 4 x 10 Warriors. 2 x 3 Destroyers. 4 Scarab Swarms. Monolith. Heavy Destroyers (2 & 1).

Rhellion took his first step into the Drop Pod realm featuring a Captain tooled up with a Jump Pack, Storm Shield, and Relic Blade. Terminator Librarian with Might of Ancients and Vortex. Ironclad Dreadnought in a Drop Pod, 5 Assault Terminators, some Sternguard and 3 x 10 man Tactical Squads all in Drop Pods, 10 man Assault Squad, 5 man Scout Bikes.

The board was a rocky landscape with large LoS blocking mountains and hills scattered around. The mission would be Capture and Control using Spearhead Deployment.

My objective would be in a small ruin while the Ultramarine object was tucked away behind a mountain in the opposite corner...

Rhellion took first turn so I opted to deploy everything. My plan was to send the Deceiver straight for the Ultramarine objective then try and hold mine with the rest of my army... can you spot the 3 Necron HQ choices in the pic below? A Grand Illusion indeed.

Scout bikes are the only Marines on the table and scout forward to position their Locator Beacon. The Deceiver used his Grand Illusion ability to redeploy a unit of Necrons that is a little too close to the bikers...

The Sternguard, Ironclad, and one Tactical Squad drop down in Turn 1. The Sternguard scatter way off target, the Ironclad lands in front of the Monolith and gets a Weapon Destroyed result I believe, the tactical squad and bikers combine fire and send a squad of Necrons falling back... LD10 FTW!

Fleeing Necrons rally. Combined fire reduces the Scout bikers to just the sarge (who will eventually charge into combat and get pummeled before he can swing his fist). Around this time we realize the Destroyer Lord should not be on the table. Sort of makes up for those snake-eyes earlier.

The Assault squad will eventually come back to join in the big stalemate assault, I'm losing by 1 or 2 wounds a turn but keep making my leadership tests and We'll Be Back rolls.

The Captain and Librarian carve up the Necrons in heroic fashion while the Necron Lord keeps his Warriors in the fight with his Resurrection Orb.

The Warriors port out and the Librarian is finally brought low by Heavy Gauss Cannon while the Ultramarine Captain (Uriel Ventris?) fights to the Necron objective chopping up all in his path... eventually he is brought down by massed shooting despite making an incredible amount of armor and Storm Shield saves.

The Necron squad on the left are champions! When I'm not trying to use a third HQ choice (too much PlanetStrike see...) I may replace the Destroyer Lord with a Lord on foot with Gaze of Flame, Resurrection Orb and whatever else may be useful... maybe an extra Scarab Swarm or two.

The Deceiver: This is the ace. Murders anything and everything. The ability to leave a combat automatically, toughness 8, 5 wounds, ignore terrain effects, ignore all forms of saves with his S9 attacks, etc... is just too good. Probably the only unit in the entire codex that is under-costed. For Planetstrike he's even better as he's almost impossible to ignore, can wreck Bastions quite easily, and is almost a guaranteed objective contester/controller.

Lords: Destroyer Lord with a War Scythe, Resurrection Orb, and Phase Shifter. I also have a regular Lord with a Resurrection Orb and whatever else I think may be useful. WS4 is real pain to over come as the Lords can and do whiff regularly in combat. The Destroyer Lord with T6 and a Res. Orb can be a real annoyance for your opponent if you are good at rolling 4+.

Warriors: Well... you gotta take 'em. I take about 40 to 50 in 2500 point games. 30 or so in regular games. Avoiding combat is difficult if not impossible with Planetstrike... so having a Monolith nearby is almost mandatory for a quick escape. I will say this though: the Supply Crates strategem on units of Warriors is 100% win. Necrons with melta bombs, offensive and defensive grenades... yes please have some.

Destroyers: My favorite unit. These guys are great and the only unit I'm considering buying more of. They do most of the real work in regular games as most Necron weaponry is pretty short ranged. T5, jetbike like movement, and a sweet ass gun for a decent cost. What's not to like? I'd take as many as I possibly could.

Scarabs: A very useful little unit here. 100% expendable, they are best used at absorbing charges and bogging down the enemy to buy you time. The Disruption Field can be somewhat useful but a little pricey.

Heavy Destroyers: Classic one hit wonders. One day they will annihilate everything, the other they will fail epically when you really need them and cost you the game. Being one of the more over-costed units they are usually the first thing to get cut if I need to shave some points.

Monolith: Everyone's favorite. The unit that breaks more core rules and causes more confusion then any other unit in the game! To me a Monolith is essential though. Necrons need a way to get out of combat. This is it's biggest benefit I believe. Also it's very tough to destroy making it a great objective contester.Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-89269568622244112852009-10-14T21:41:00.000-07:002009-10-21T15:49:05.133-07:00Necron vs Necron... the thirst of Gods unleashed part 1!
Planetstike League Game 5 brought to you by The Ordo Fraternitas Chapter of the 40kFightClub! 20 pictures of unadulterated Necron on Necron action brought to you now... I was surprised I won since I think the Attacker is hard pressed to win in this mission. But where there's a phase out, there's a way. 13 Scorched Sky Fire Storms demolishing that bastion and the 15 enemy Necrons inside was the best start ever. I weathered an early storm of Gauss fire with some amazing armour saves to start out with too. But there was a point where I failed 8 straight 3+ armor saves and those 30 enemy Warriors weren't dying as easy as expected when the enemy Monolith came on. Then the Deceiver nuked 9 Warriors and all was right again.

Part 2 will come... the Nightbringer will awaken while Big D tries to pull it together in his house... who will win the C'tan showdown?

Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-22382122009891597492009-10-12T16:36:00.000-07:002010-02-26T13:07:16.544-08:00NecronsMy Necrons... I ordered the red plastics from Plastruct, they also have yellow and blue, but red looked the coolest and goes along with the whole Mars theme. Painting Necrons is very simple, and as long as you are neat you can have a pretty cool looking army in no time. I still need to finish those Monoliths...

Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-83881611027940770542009-10-08T13:30:00.000-07:002010-02-26T13:04:23.633-08:00Forward Tin 'eadz!Space Hulk: I got to play Space Hulk for the first time since 1995 a few weekends ago. The second game was epic. We played the second mission where there is a limited number of Genestealers and each side has to kill each other completely more or less. It came down to a single marine guarding a long corridor with his back to the wall preventing the Genestealers coming in behind him. Dan "NoTeef" proceeded to roll a 6 with nearly every shot and gun down over a dozen Genestealers as we tried to run down adjacent corridors or make a break across an open junction... incredible.

Necrons and Planetstrike: My local Planetstrike League is in full effect. I've been using my new Necron army and have gone 2-2 so far, winning both my games as attacker.

The default points value for the league is 2500. My list is pretty much unchanged from week to week as I only have about 2750 points of Necrons and don't really want to buy a ton of stuff for them as the new Tyranids are on the horizon and most of the metal models are butt-ugly. I run pretty much Destroyers and Warriors with a couple Lords and Monoliths and take it from there. I'll sneak in The Deceiver sometimes... ;)Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-82281791809770449192009-08-20T08:53:00.000-07:002009-10-21T15:49:19.363-07:00Year 1 Battle StatisticsI've kept track of games played from roughly August 2008 to August 2009 to track how much of a geek I am, haha. I may have missed two or three games but it's pretty close.

53 total games played. 28 different players involved (including myself).

36-5-12 (W-D-L) Overall record.
23-3-9 overall with Orks.
11-2-3 overall with Space Marines.
2-0-0 overall with other (Eldar and Tyranids).

7 games involved either teammates, were 3-way 1vs1vs1, or Apocalypse games.
6 out of 7 of these games I played as Orks and had an overall record of 3-0-4.

In 46 standard 1 on 1 games I am 33-5-8 against 23 different players.
20-3-6 with Orks.
11-2-2 with Space Marines.
2-0-0 with other.

Other Stats:
Most common point level was 2000, with 2500 being a distant 2nd, followed by 1500.
The most common armys faced:
1. Space Marines (not a surprise but Black Templars being the most common is sort of surprising).
2. Chaos Space Marines (a very close 2nd).
3. tied between Eldar and Orks. (sort of surprised at the number of Eldar).
5. tied Chaos Demons and Imperial Guard.
7. tied Witch Hunters and Tau.
9. with 2 or less apprearances: Necrons, Tyranids, and Dark Eldar. (only 1 game against the bugs... surprising.)

Chaos Space Marines were the most difficult army type to defeat, followed by Space Marines. Everything else was crushed for the most part haha. Notable defeats outside the Marine types include losing 2 games with my Space Marines: One against Ghazghkull fueled orks and the other my only game against Tyranids.

As for accomplishments I won a 2008 'Ard Boyz Qualifier, won a Club only Tournament, and won the Local League. This was due mostly to playing updated codexes for 5th edition, experience (having been playing since '93), and blind luck. I don't expect to do this well in the next year for a few reasons: 1) Planetstrike. This will add a new dimension to the game and really be something different. 2) New Armys. I plan step outside the comfort zone and field Necrons, Tyranids and Space Marines mostly and relegate the Orks to large scale battles... maybe, haha.Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-21184697931358965322009-08-14T09:32:00.001-07:002010-02-26T13:00:20.386-08:0040k updateIn 40k news:

1) I've won my local league with my Orks. Waaagh! After an early set back in game 1 where my orks ran away in terror against some tough marines I proceeded to win the next 6 league games in a row. I may post more game details later. The next league is going to be focused on Planetstrike and I plan to field the Crimson Cobra space marines to glory... I hope (EDIT: I ended up going with Necrons).

2) My gaming group is also currently running a 'Tale of 4 Gamers'-esque league. My army of choice? Necrons! a) They are quick and easy to paint and that works well with my schedule. b) They don't have the myriad of options like Tyranids (my 2nd choice) do with their biomorphs... so I don't have to model all these things only to find out they are useless in a new codex.

3) I've compiled a spreadsheet of all my games over the last year and will be publishing those statistics very soon.Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-47446754422447541652009-06-22T17:34:00.001-07:002009-10-21T15:49:43.758-07:00Battle Report: 2500pts. Marines vs Orks. It's been a while since a battle report has been done but this is a bit of a special occasion. My good friend John will be moving to New York shortly and we decided on a big throw-down. At first I considered a 3500pt Apocalypse game, but we got off to kind of a late start and went for a straight up 2500 point game instead (we were both a little over 2500 but no big deal). I still want to get that Apoc game in though!

We played on my typical 6x4 table, but added an additional 2.5x4 table for a larger battlefield.

My army list was thus:

Space Marines (Crimson Cobras):
HQ: Brother Captain Shon Vale: bolter(hellfire shells), Relic Blade, Iron Halo.
Command Squad: 1 marine: Meltagun, Thunder Hammer. 3 marines: Combi-Plasmaguns. Sgt: Signum.

Total Points: 2505

Despite the fact I knew I would be fighting orks, I took models I wanted to use more then models that would maybe do better against the horde. I knew I wanted to take the Captain and Command Squad I just built along with their partially complete Drop Pod. And I knew I wanted to take as many marines as I could... so I left my usual compliment of Razorbacks back at the motor pool to free up the points to do this while still leaving in the expensive heavy hitters like Sternguard and Assault Terminators.

Orks (Waaagh! Kong Bundy):
HQ: Warboss: Power Klaw, Combi-Skorcha, 'eavy armour, Cybork Body, Bosspole, Attack Squig.
HQ: Warboss: Mega-Armour, Cybork Body, Bosspole.

Elites: 12 Lootas.
Elites: 10 Burna Boyz. John won the dice roll and gave me choice of sides and 1st turn. I chose the quarter with the Firebase in it and placed my objective by this formidable structure protected by my combat squaded Devastators and held by the Lascannon toting combat squad of Crimson Primus. The Assault Terminators were deployed in the Crusader lead by Chaplain Magura and along with the Dreadnought were set up as close to the middle of the board as allowed. The Rhino carrying my jump-packless Assault Squad was as far left as my DZ would allow. The rest of my combat squaded marines set up in supporting positions on hills to shoot as many orks as possible as early as possible.

Left in reserve were the Sternguard and Captain Vale with his Command Squad... these elite warriors would strike down the vile aliens and contest their objective in a Drop Pod Assault and also force the orks to split their army to deal with this threat to their objective. My goal was to contest the objective, force the ork army to split, and make the orks run a gauntlet of bolter fire and Assault Terminators to have any hope of challenging my objective.

We both knew we could move anything from reserves on from our long board edge and make a b-line straight for the enemy objective but I kept nothing in reserve save the Drop Pods and John deployed his entire army... intent on steam-rolling past the marines with numbers and mobility... like a true ork!

Deployment
The marines take up firing positions on the hills, anchored by the Crusader and Dreadnought in the middle.

The marine objective (the shrine, tombstone thing) guarded by the last line of defense, the Devastators and combat squad Crimson Primus. The Nobz and Burnas combine to kill the five melta-combi Sternguard but were unable to engage the other Sternguard combat squad who deployed on the other side of the Drop Pod. That task was left to the Stormboyz who whiffed and were run down trying to flee... (though 1 marine was killed by the Stormboy Nob's Klaw).

In other assaults, the Space Marine assault squad was butchered by the Warboss and 'Ard Boyz... the two survivors using Combat Tactics to escape but the orks were hot on their heels. The Mega-Boss disembarked by himself and assaulted the Crusader, getting the 6 needed to hit and penetrating it with a 5... however the damage result was a 1... (whew dodged one there!)

TURN 2
The marines counter-attack. Captain Vale makes his glorious debut and Drop Pods in on target to support the Sternguard. A plethora of 1's to wound and wound allocation sees very little damage done to the Nobz mob though.

The Assault Terminators led by Chaplain Magura disembarks from the Crusader to engage the Mega-boss knocking on the door and multi-assaults the nearby Warbikes. The Mega-boss is wounded twice by Lightning Claws, Magura makes his Rosarius save to avoid being crushed by the Mega-boss who is eventually done in by Thunder Hammer. The Warbikes are crushed and the wounded Nob flees to tell the tale. Only 1 Terminator was lost in the combat.

Anything that can shoot does so into the 'Ard Boyz and all that is left is the Warboss and a handful of 'Ard Boyz when the shooting stops. The marine Dreadnought charges in and insta-kills the other Warboss before being detroyed by the 'Ard Boy Nob's Power Klaw.

2 Warbosses dead in 1 turn = 0 complaints. Also of note is that combat squad Sevenus destroyed an ork Trukk with it's missile launcher... the Ramshackle result giving the orks the most favorable result.

TURN 2
The Lootas look around and can't see much... they shoot at combat squad Sevenus who wrecked the Trukk but I make all my amrour saves (6 I think?)

The Shoota Boyz are content to stay in the cover offered by the graveyard and shoot down an Assault Terminator with mass dakka. The Trukkboyz who had their ride wrecked last turn assault them only to be utterly crushed... their wounded Nob fleeing, searching for the Warbike Nob to give him a lift...

The T-rex rips apart the marine Rhino with it's little Klaw arms (counts as Deff-Rolla).

The other squad of Trukkboyz disembark and Waaagh! into special weapon combat squad Sevenus and kill them all. The command squad... in no small way due to incredible 3+ saves coupled with Feel No Pain from the Apothecary are able to weather an obscene amount of attacks, though the Apothecary and the marine carrying the Thunder Hammer die. Captain Vale is saved from being crushed to death via Power Klaw via Iron Halo. The marines fight on.

TURN 3
The sergeant of squad Crimson Primus and the remaining Assault marines of squad Tyde continue to... erm... strategically withdraw... the latter strategically withdrawing to withing an 1" of the table edge...

Having neutralized the ork's left flank, the marines look to redeploy. Combat squad Kai embark on the Crusader which moves to create a buffer between the mass of Shoota Boyz in the graveyard and the rest of my army and to engage the T-Rex Battlewagon... immobilizing it.

A volley of Heavy Bolter fire from the Devastators eliminates the rest of the 'Ard Boyz while the rest of the marines concentrate on shooting the last mob of Trukkboyz off the table.

The Sternguard charge in to assist Captain Vale and company. A Power Klaw attack eventually finds it's way through the Captain's Iron Halo and he is brought low but not before taking a Nob with him with his Relic Blade. The marines somehow win the combat by 1 wound by eliminating what was left of the Burna Boyz and clobbering two Nobs with the Sternguard sergeant's Power Fist... but the Nobz pass morale and the fight continues.

TURN 3
The Lootas fire another volley at combat squad Sevenus and this time wipe them out to a man (I failed 7 out of 9 saves or something silly like that.) The ork buggies wheel around and ensure that the fleeing remnants of squads Tyde and Crimson Primus will run off the table...

The grot riggers break out the magic squig-sponge on the T-rex's leg and it's mobile again. The Shoota Boyz emerge from the cover of the graveyard and charge the Crusader but the Nob's Power Klaw fails to damage it.

The remaining Sternguard and command squad are finished off by the Nobz mob who, down to just a handful of models, consolidate towards their objective.

TURN 4
The Assault Terminators move to engage the Shoota Boyz... Combat squad Kai disembarks from the Crusader, their flamer ready to burninate the tightly packed boyz. Atleast that was the plan...

Every game will always have that turn where your shooting will let you down. Well this was it. I sent a lascannon, 3 krak missiles, a multi-melta, and a twin-linked assault cannon into the side armour of the re-mobilized T-Rex Battlewagon... and did bupkis.

But there was still plan C: The marines of squad Kai. As much as I wanted to cover a dozen orks with a flamer template I instead charged the T-Rex and seeing how it didn't move last turn I was able to destroy it with a well placed krak grenade! Eat that!

John was happy it lasted 4 turns.

It was now left up to the Assault Terminators to engage another unmolested ork unit. They brought down 10 orks for the loss of just 1 more Terminator... forcing the fearless orks to take a further 9 wounds. ouch.

Turn 4
The Nobz merrily wreck a Drop Pod. The Lootas flubbed on their amount of shots and failed to kill any marines with their Deffgunz. The buggies make a desparate move towards to marine's objective, their twin-linked rokkit shot failing to hit the Crusader as it passed by.

In combat the now depleted Shoota boyz were no match for the Assault Terminators as yet another wounded Nob flees from their wrath, though 1 more Terminator is brought down. The Terminators get a good 5" consolidate into the graveyard... eyeing the Lootas...

TURN 5
Squad Kai re-embarks on the Crusader which drives over the remains of the T-Rex (making sure it's dead see...). The DT roll is passed and it closes in on the ork Nobz. A volley of Machine-Spirited twin-linked assault cannon fire reduces the Nobz to a wounded Painboy and single Klaw wielding Nob who hold their nerve.

Shooting from the Devastators and my remaining marines wrecks the ork buggies. The Assault Terminators get a 6" difficult terrain roll and clear the graveyard. Able to assault the Lootas the result isn't pretty (for the orks).

TURN 5
The orks just have the remnants of the Nobz mob and a single rokkit armed Trukk remaining. It's now a question of if the Nobz can get to their objective and secure a draw.

The rokkit misses the Crusader and the Nobz wreck the last Drop Pod in their journey back to the objective. The game continues...

TURN 6-7
The Nobz are eventually gunned down in Turn 6 and the ork Trukk destroyed in Turn 7. What a glorious victory for the marines!

MVP: Left with a wounded Chaplain Magura and 2 gore-soaked Assault Terminators, this uber unit went through a Mega-boss, 6 Warbikers, 10 Trukkboyz, 20+ Shoota Boyz, and a unit of Lootas. Madness!

A close second star would be the Crusader. The orks struggle to deal with Land Raiders and when they get their shot they gotta have the dice... unfortunately for John he rolled a 1 when his Mega-boss got that shot... it would have been a different game for sure if that roll was a 5 or 6.

Looking forward to the Apoc game!Gargunkihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09507880761391604629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3632106184805302361.post-20236524644831496202008-12-09T08:32:00.000-08:002010-02-26T12:51:31.573-08:00Space Marine Army ListsMy 1250pt list I used in my gaming groups tournament was as follows:

HQ: Librarian- Smite, Null Zone.
